"Greetings. I've really enjoyed your website and the many fascinating recordings that you have archived. Thank you for making this vast array of audio treasures available to the public. BRAVO to all of you! I have a historical ask for you and your organization. I'm looking for any radio spots or interviews that featured Tom Fretty. Tom was an entrepreneur who started Tom's Mechanical Music Wonderland U.S.A. (a.ka. Tom's Country Market and Musical Museum) in Manly, Iowa. It was a hugely popular entertainment complex & multi-state visitor attraction throughout the 1970s. The park attracted 53,000 visitors in 1976, and there were thousands of visitors who drove south from Minnesota to see it each year (Manly is located just south of Albert Lea, MN). Tom was a heavy radio advertiser throughout Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and the Dakotas in the 1970-1979 timeframe. In fact, a huge number of the season ticket holders were Minnesota residents. The park's season only ran from April 1st to Nov. 1st each year. I know that one of his commercials used the tune from "The Wabash Cannonball" in some way. Likely a parody or using the tune (instrumental) as a sound bed. Tom also started and owned "Tom's Damaged and Unclaimed Freight" in North Iowa, from 1959 to 1970, but I don't think he used radio to advertise that particular business. I'm currently working on a documentary film that highlights Tom's life and times. If you have access to any archival radio clips that would highlight Tom Fretty, his wife Jean Fretty, Tom's many businesses, or the museum, I would be very interested in hearing about them. P.S. Tom and Jean do have MN connections because they both grew up in Blue Earth, Minnesota. The person (Don Raverty) who created the animatronic figures (featured in the clip above) was from St. Paul. There may have been radio interviews with him during those years, too. He had a very unique skill set. "Hey there! This is so random, but I am looking for a digitized KDWB aircheck from somewhere around April 10–13, 2006. My friend was the on-air winner for the Fall Out Boy Xcel Energy Center meet-and-greet package on (I think) Tone E. Fly's show. The bit/contest required callers to share the worst lie they had ever told their parents; she won by claiming she'd actually totaled her parents' car while giving her boyfriend road head (but lied to them that it was something else causing the accident). When they called her to share the story live she had a ringback of Cheap Trick's "I want you to want me." My Mom, Patricia Sandgren won a contest to have the morning show broadcast from our house. They did a live remote broadcast from our house in St. Louis Park. The contest winner was my mom, Patricia Sandgren. On the air when I was about 6 or 7 I ratted my mom out by telling the Twin Cities that we didn't wear a seatbelts in the car, my brother complained about his mean school bus driver, and us kids showed off our pet gerbils. Listening to clips from WCCO (AM and FM), KS95, KDWB and others takes me back instantly to my younger years of the '70s and '80s. "Cedric Adams received a 1953 Corvette from General Motors to drive and promote. This was the very first Corvette delivered to Minnesota. Is it possible that Radio Tapes would have any radio tape that mentions his Corvette. I have been told that Cedric called it a Chevrolet. "Regarding Jonathan H's questions from 2022 regarding "Chu Chu Rockets" - this was a piece composed for a Dreamcast Video Game of the same name which was composed and sung by the late Asei Kobayashi. He wasn't just a quirky singer/songwriter, he was actually director of the Japanese Songwriters Association and was 88 when he passed. Lots of people liked that commercial because it was quirky, cute, and fun. He was a voice actor who figured prominently in several popular 70s Japanese Anime productions. The lyrics basically translate to this: "Chu Chu Rocket! Save the Mice. Chu Chu Rocket! The Cats are Scary! Chu Chu Rocket! Rockets are Amazing!" It's no surprise it ended up on a pirate radio station which seemed to be fairly common in the west metro of the Twin Cities at that time in the early 2000s and each station tried to out-do each other by as quirky and strange as possible." "I’m a guitar player in the Netherlands and I just bought a guitar from 1937. I’m also a historian so I love to do this kind of research. The guitar is a Gibson Super 400. I learned from the previous owner that this guitar was bought in 1937 by a Mr. Ken/Kenneth Spears, who was the guitarist in the WCCO radio orchestra in the late 30s and later on. He also met his wife there, a singer called Betty Brewer. They also played together on the 1954 30th anniversary radio show. They kept performing together even on older age. Mr. Spears bought the guitar at the B.A. Rose Music Store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you want I have found several pictures of him with the guitar and his wife. I thought you might be interested. For me, it would be fantastic if there are recordings left of their performance on the 30th anniversary radio show (or other), so I could hear him playing the guitar and singing with his wife. That would be awesome. In fact, any information on Ken Spears (and/or his wife) would be great! Also pictures if there are any. Hoping to get a reaction, thanks in advance and with kind regards." I believe you might’ve obtained this audio with the help of Scott Holthus of the Music Vintage Company. I interviewed Scott for my story. "Hi, I'm looking for recording of a radio incident in 1974 or 75 in which a KQRS DJ (maybe Jay Philpott or Wally Walker ?) spoke for a minute in a unusual way followed by saying "what made me say that ?" We were listening in a car, and the really weird thing is that, for that minute the DJ was talking, I was talking too and SAYING THE SAME THING ! "Request - radio morning show in about 1977 that celebrated my birthday. My parents are gone now, but my mom told a story about how she made a special request, and was floored by the results. My mom and dad drove me to daycare or kindergarten on the way to work every morning, and we would listen to a popular, funny early morning radio show, with two male hosts who would tell entertaining stories. We lived in Chaska / Jonathan / Victoria, but it was probably just a Minneapolis station. I don't know if it was FM or AM. My mom decided to write to the hosts and ask them, "I know you never do this, but my son loves your show, and could you wish him a happy birthday between so-and-so times on his birthday, May 25th?" So, my birthday comes, I'm not sure how old I was. I'm guessing it was 1976 to 1979? We get in the car, my mom turns on the radio - and to her shock, every time the hosts talk between songs, they're talking about me. They're singing, "It's Matthew Cruikshank Day! It's Matthew Cruikshank Day! And now we're going to say - it's Matthew Cruikshank Day!" They're making up facts, "In 1492, Matthew Cruikshank discovered America!" They're reading out recipes attributed to me. They're talking about how I discovered the head of the Nile River. And on and on. I don't know how much my parents embellished this story. It may have been a complete fabrication. But if the story is real, I'd love to have some good guesses who the hosts were, and the name of the show, and station... And ideally, I'd love to get a recording. I know it's a complete long-shot, without much information to go on. Someone guessed it may have been Hines and Berglund on 99.5 WLOL? If you have any idea of who I could contact to have them check for May 25 recordings around those years, I'd really appreciate it. "I was the pianist/music director of A Prairie Home Companion for decades. In my teenage years, I worked with Al Jarreau. I'm helping gather historical materials for an author who is doing an in depth biography of Al. In an era around 1969-71, Marilyn Goodman had a show on KQRS called "Marilyn's Scene". It was a Rock interview show and her guests included Al Jarreau, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elton John, Joe Cocker and on and on. I just talked to Marilyn, and she said that all the original tape masters of those interviews are lost. I know that sometimes devoted fans record programs off the radio, and thought that maybe you knew of some devoted "Marilyn's Scene" fan who may have some of those shows on tape. I am looking for a recording by a group called the Two Tones and the Tonette. The "Tonette" was my aunt, and they sang as a local group in the Twin Cities area and were at some point on the radio in the mid-1930s to early 1940s. My mother who is 91 now remembers listening to them on the radio. My aunt married and moved to California and had one daughter in 1950 who has little to remember her mother by. My aunt passed away in 1987. I don't know what radio station they were on, but it would have been received in SW Minnesota, near the Jackson and Windom areas. We are filming a documentary of the 50th anniversary of the Sylmar earthquake (Los Angeles) which happened at 6:02 AM, February 9, 1971. We'd like to open the show with the radio audio. Paley doesn't have it, and I know somewhere it exists. KHJ would have had a jock on, same with KRLA and other music stations. I'm checking with CBS soon regarding KNX, but that likely would have been a network cast. KFWB no longer exists, but that would probably be the best. "I am an employee of the Minnesota Historical Society, currently conducting research on former Minnesota Sen. Henrik Shipstead (years in office: 1923-1947). I'm looking for recordings or transcripts of speeches he would occasionally deliver over the radio to Minnesotans and wondering if you have any in your collection, or know where I might look for them. I know his speeches were often broadcast on KSTP, but as far as I've been able to determine, we don't have anything in our collections at MNHS. Any information you can provide would be very helpful." "Years ago, on WCCO radio, a national news report was being carried about a fat man at a circus who had died. He apparently was so big that he couldn’t be carried in a hearse, so he was being buried off of the end of a pickup truck. As the announcer was relating the story, he's starting snickering and tried to control himself. This evolved into belly laughs and eventually he was squealing like a baby pig. "Subject: Halloween Blizzard. My mother and I moved to Minneapolis on Halloween day 1991. That was my first year trick or treating as a six year old boy. I was Batman. I recall trudging through snow that was waist deep (though I am much taller now) in my batman costume. People were still handing out candy, I filled my little bucket. My mother bought an especially large load of groceries for some reason and then that happened. The first house we lived in was a duplex, my window faced south and was over the garage, so every big snowfall it would be covered with snow for several days at a minimum. Sometimes as much as a week. I awoke the next day and initially thought our two-story home was buried. But it was, of course not. We lived in the Twin Cities until October 1995. Three or four days shy of 4 years. I hold fond memories of the Twin Cities. Have been living in Orlando, FL since, where snow is not a concern. During the winter of 2009-2010, I did see it snow, then sleet for a few minutes early on a Saturday morning. I can just imagine the carnage if it ever snowed down here." David A. (4/7/2020)
