Comments 2010-2019

In October, 1937 Glenn Miller and his orchestra spent the month at the Nicollet Hotel performing music for dancing and dining. Many evening broadcasts were carried by radio station, WCCO. This was before Miller became nationally famous in 1939. While there, he participated in the Minneapolis Community Fund Campaign and even composed the 1937 Community Fund theme sing, "Let's Give Them A Break". Question: Might there be any broadcasts of the Miller ensemble over WCCO be preserved in your holdings? As well as any broadcasts covering the October, 1937 'Community Fund Campaign' be preserved? "My grandfather, Roy Darth, and his friend Marvin (don't know the last name) had a live radio music show on KTSP back in the 1930s. My sisters and I are trying to locate any tapes of his show--if they exist at all. We have reached out to KSTP radio, but they are a sports station now and it is unclear if they have access to archival material. We know he played guitar on the radio and he continued to play for pleasure throughout his life. We spent Sunday afternoons with him in the 60s learning songs from the 20s and 30s, like Five Foot Two, Four Leaf Clover, L.O.V.E., Old Shep, etc. My father is elderly and not always clear in his memories, but he says that the group was called South Sea Serenaders, which seems odd for a couple of Swedes from Mpls, but it could be accurate or it could be my dad is blending memories. I'm hoping you can help us with our search. Even pointing us in the right direction to get started would be much appreciated. We are hoping to track these down for my father, who is in ill health. I am looking for recordings from the early 30s through 50s of my grandmother, Ruby Dougherty. She was on the Slim Jim and the Vagabond Kid program at four years old, so around 1933, on WDGY. She also had her own program under the name Ruby Dee on WCCO in the late 40s or 50s. We don't have any audio from that time and it would be really neat to hear her. She passed away in 1982. "Here's more of my local radio days. I was a classical music DJ at 99.5 WLOL-FM and recall signing if off to taped MOR music in 1973. While at the parent company BFR Broadcasting, I started out part time running board during the week and weekends at 1330 WLOL-AM Talk. Now it's Catholic Family Radio. That was a wondrous time. Show hosts were Brad Johnson that I worked with previously at KRSI 950 AM, Roy Fox, Bob Allard, Mpls Tribune writer Jim Klobuchar & Paul Helm. I ran board overnights with Dean Grauds. I never seem to get around to writing a book about my 19 years in local radio ranging from DJ to engineer and sales. The radio biz has been most kind to me. So before the memories fade like radio waves, I hope to write a book. Many good stories. I do have a 9,000 word reminisce of WLOL-FM classical music. Google "What Does A Classical Music DJ Do?" "HI: I am looking for a program that Rollie Johnson (Dir. of TV Sports) did in the early 1950s on Otto Rindlisbacher's deer camp known as "The One-Shot Gang." Members of this camp were from Rice Lake, WI. I am writing a book on Otto Rindlisbacher who presided over this deer camp. It aired on WCCO as Rollie indicates to Otto in a letter dated November 23, 1954. He mentions in this letter that it aired "some time ago." Can I get a copy of this item? "I wish I had some radio tapes of Ralph Jon Fritz who just passed away from cancer these last few days. Actually he started out doing really well on the radio before Channel 4 offered him a job in sports with WCCO Television He spent 40 years on WCCO-TV. I don't have any tapes of RJ from KRSI 950 back in 1967 but I wish I could hear him again over KRSI. He actually did a disc jockey show a few hours every day and he teamed up on Friday nights doing play by play Lake Conference football and basketball from the stands at different high schools with Tony Parker. "I heard a song on WCCO as a child about the state of Minnesota some time between 1956 and 1959. I recall the tag (I'm not certain) going something like this: "when you talk about Minnesota, Minnesota, that's the place I want to be." Another lyric played like this: "let me tell you about the Mississippi, mightiest river of all;" and another line goes: "and the greatest place to there is Minneapolis and St. Paul. 'We're sixty years give or take so I'm a bit dim on the exact lyrics.' I'd like to know what year WCCO played that song. It played like a jingle promoting the twin cities, or just a fun ditty." "My father, Edward Courtney, was a radio announcer on WDGY in the late 30s and early 40s. I have a newspaper ad featuring him for the 12:15 news. I also have his contract, and a blurb in Cedric Adams' "In This Corner" column. Apparently there was a bomb threat on WDGY. Crowds gathered, the police milled. My father was on-air and when the appointed time came for the big kaboom, he played "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule". I also have a picture of him introducing FDR on the radio in 1936. "Love the May 7, 1965, day-after-the-tornado recordings! One correction: in the text of your 8:15-9:20 a.m. recording, the juice product was called "Beep," not "beet"! (I ate and drank a lot of disagreeable things as a child, but I think even I would've rebelled at drinking liquefied beets!) I remember Beep; it had a thicker consistency than orange juice (thanks to the apricot nectar and prune juice) and what would be considered an unacceptably high sugar content today. In other words, it actually tasted good! It was delivered by the Cloverleaf milkman. Google "Beep" to see a picture of the carton. He passed away December 2005 and I never got a chance to really speak with him about it. I don't know the dates, or the exact station. I'm guessing it was in the 60s as he married my mother in 1977. His name was Robert David Swenson and is birthdate is 4/12/40. He was in the marines, not sure Of the dates again, 50s I think. He was from the south Minneapolis area and loved country music, he was a very good musician, great singer and guitarist. "I am searching for information regarding my uncle's singing on the radio back in the 1940s, and hoping to find a recording of him on the radio, or maybe even an actual record. I don't know if he made a record but I do know his singing was on the radio. My mother just celebrated her 95th birthday and is exceptionally healthy and active for her age, able to appreciate the finer things in life such as music and the arts. Her younger brother, Rolland Melville (first name Rolland is spelled with two LLs and he is deceased), was a student at MacPhail School of Music in 1942, and went on to have a singing career which included being on the radio. I am uncertain if he was a host or co-host on the radio, or if he was a guest singer, or if his songs were merely played on the radio. And also, do not know which radio station or stations he was on. I have a wonderful idea for a Christmas gift for my mother - I would like to obtain a recording or an actual record of my Uncle Rolland's singing for her! I am requesting information you may have in your archives regarding radio stations and radio shows active in the Twin Cities back in the 1940s. "To whom it may concern, I remember listening to the Joe Soucheray show years ago, and I am thinking 15 to 20 years at least, about Joe's guest who owned a ferry service to isle royal, I believe from grand portage, Minnesota. I believe the boat was waiting for new propellers and lost its mooring or maybe broke tow during a bad storm on lake superior and the boat had to fend for its self without props and it doesn't have a very good ending. "I was, variously, a DJ, tech and PR person in Twin Cities radio from 1963 to around 1976. I recall KEVE and KADM in 1963, which became KQRS. Leigh Kamman played jazz in the evening. Many others contributed their talents, including Herb Schoenbohm, spinning Bossa Nova and classical music, Ron Wandmacher, Dick Driscoll, Fred King, John Pete and Jerry Cunning. I'll have more later about other stations where I worked. But those folks mentioned contributed mightily to the station during various format changes. My partner grew up in the Twin Cities and asked the other day about this show, and whether any audio of it still existed. How fun to discover that at least 3 shows exist! We plan to listen to them over the next few days. Also - what an impressive collection of WCCO audio and printed materials over the years. I haven't looked at your other station archives yet, but I'm sure those are equally interesting. I hope the management and staff of the respective stations appreciate your efforts. It always strikes me as strange that radio has a pretty lousy track record of documenting its own local efforts. After 20 years in radio (I began at my high school station in 1991, age 17), I'm no longer sure if it's something a person can continue with. I grew up in Sacramento and eventually moved to northern Michigan. I've worked at both non-commercial and commercial stations in both locales. Station owners/managers, at least around these parts, no longer see their stations as something to share with the public - and loaning the "keys" to others (I.e. staff/employees) seems to be a concept that's gone extinct. "In the early 60s KDWB had a young 17 year old newscaster named Dan Ronald. I think that was his real name. This latter item brings me to my point of contacting you-- Is there any good Internet resource for obtaining historic radio broadcast files in the Boston, MA area? I would love to obtain some old broadcasts, especially news and talk shows from older incarnations of WBZ, WEEI, and WRKO, as well the now-defunct radio outlets WCOP, WHDH, WMEX, and WNAC. Boston has its place in broadcast history too, WBZ-AM being among the first and now oldest, continuously-broadcasting radio stations, as well Jerry Williams (WMEX, WBZ & WRKO) having been a pioneer of the talk radio genre that is very well established today. I am also old enough and media savvy enough to recall several Minnesota reference points on your website, such as your former governor Harold Stassen having been a perennial United States' presidential candidate, and, of course, the second "Happy Warrior" (the first former New York governor Alfred Smith) of American political life, former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, who was a Minneapolis mayor and longtime Minnesota senator before becoming nationally prominent as vice president in the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and thrice (1960, 1968, 1972) a presidential candidate, the 1968 Democrat Party nominee. I even recall the "Dump the Hump" slogan in reference to HHH's support of LBJ's Vietnam War policies. My dad always got a kick out of Humphrey, I'm sure voted for him in '68, although supported Richard Nixon's re-election by '72 (and, strangely, Sen. George McGovern in the primaries that year). I think part of that was I had worked in McGovern's campaign that year, when I was just 14 years old. But my dad genuinely respected McGovern, even voted for him in a comeback campaign in 1988, the year Michael Dukakis received the Democrat presidential nomination. This I deciphered from the following information: the Twins were off that evening; they began a three game set at the Metrodome against the brewers; the starting pitchers the next evening were names Butcher and Cocanower. I took this information to baseball-reference.com, this link, to come to this conclusion.. Sure, this pitching duel could have happened more than once within a season, but Cannon referenced a Nurses strike that was coming up on June 1. "Your most recent posting on radiotapes.com of the "EBS mistake of 1971" inspired me to look up local newspaper articles from the Minneapolis Tribune and Minneapolis Star on microfilm at the downtown library and I found some more information about what other radio stations here did when that incident happened. It appears that WCCO was the only station to broadcast an alert, but according to a Tribune article, "WDGY was within 30 seconds of going off the air" and WCCO-TV was about to break into programming to make an announcement, which would have signaled the other TV stations to go off the air. A Minneapolis Star article indicates that "WLOL and KQRS didn't go off the air because an engineer on duty didn't see the original message until after the cancellation had been sent" and "other stations caught the correction before broadcasting was interruped...including WWTC, WMIN and KSTP." "I recall signing WLOL-FM classical music over their easy listening music format in 1972. Later on, my former boss/GM Ray Ose at WLOL-FM started the classic format at KTWN-FM in Anoka. There's a Forest Powers story on the change in this website. Thus KTWN-FM was the last (so far) commercial classical music station. Minnesota Public Radio took up the cross and carried to to their very successful non-commercial classics format nationwide. But it sure would be fun to go back to do the classics again in a commercial setting. But it is very hard to make money at it that way. If anyone wants to read about what went on when the mic was shut off and the "long hair" music was playing, I wrote a 9,000-word article for musicweb International. "Thanks for letting me reply. I can fill in the blank of KWTN-FM when they had classical music from 1974 to 1976. It was my last radio job. I then went into my own freelance AV media business. I came over because I was about to lose a printing sales job and I had previously been at WLOL-FM when they had classical music. I signed KTWN on at 6am, did the morning show till 10am and then we went to prerecorded classical music hosted tapes. I did a live noon hour show with interviews and classics. Then we were back to tapes till 4pm for Dave Madsen, the afternoon DJ. Can't recall who did nights. It was a struggle. And so we were the last commercial classical music station in the Twin Cities. MPR took over and were, ironically, on the 99.5 spot on the FM dial where good old WLOL-FM classical music was. MPR's listener-supported radio has thrived. But it might be nice to have an alternative commercial classical station, too, if it were practical." Jim Stokes (3/8/2010)

(Radiotapes comment: Message received to correct a previous posting -- Thank you, Mark) "On the recent ABC Radio sound-bytes/air-checks, the very first one "top-of-hour one/whistle"... That is NOT and NEVER WAS their top-of-hour tone. Sometime in the late 1950s thru the 1960s until 31-Dec-1967, ABC Radio had a "chord-like" top-of-hour tone, sort of like a "pleasant sounding guitar chord". It was heard from time-to-time (during live coverage of JFK's assassination, for example), and at the start of Paul Harvey's midday 15-min newscast, and other misc. programs here/there that began at the top of the hour, but since regular hourly newscasts started at 54:30 to 59:30, it wasn't heard by most people as often as the CBS "Bong" or the NBC 700-Hz BEEEEEEP. On 01-Jan-1968, ABC Radio changed the hourly tone to a 1-Kc bip tone. Throughout most of 1968, it was a 2 or 3 second BEEEP at 1000 Cycles, shortened to a 1/2-second 'bip' of 1000 cycles after 1968. ABC-TV even used this "bip" tone of 1-Kc in the 1970s-era as well. It continued at least on ABC Radio through the end of landlines in 1984 when ABC Radio went 100% satellite. That "whistle" tone is rather the "cue-ing" tone used all over the place throughout the hour on ABC Radio. It sounds like the more advanced cue-ing system used from 1982 until the mid-1990s (when ABC switched to a digital cue-ing system that was not audible tones, but digital signals on a separate digital channel. These would be heard at the start and stop of programs, including the hourly Information newscast, but also just about all other programs on the network. It was similar to CBS Radio's NetAlert "bleep" or "chirps" (and CBS eliminated the audible chirps in Fall 2009 when they went to an inaudible digital system as well), or the Mutual BEE-doops, or the NBC Radio Hotline "gurgle" tones. So, while the "whistle" might have been heard at the top of the hour at the start of an Information newscast, it was not really a top-of-hour tone. ABC Radio rather used a 1-Kc "bip" tone (until 1984) as their top-of-hour tone. And the "whistle" was heard at just about any time during the hour at the start/stop of any program, start/stop of commercial breaks, etc. Until it was replaced with an internal digital system in the mid-1990s." "Hi Guys. I grew up listening to radio in Minneapolis--my favorite station was WLOL, Hit Radio WLOL, back then. It's been great hearing snippets of some of my favorite jocks, like Tac Hammer. His voice was as smooth as a hot knife going thru butter! Also, whatever happened to Karen Wong--she was great to listen to but she always seemed to get moved around from time slot to time slot. My dad, and Uncle who is 86, and their friends used to listen to the program after school, and dad acquired the nickname "Speed" as a result. (The name stuck with him his whole life). "I just recently found your web site. Very entertaining. I have a question for you. When I was a kid, back in the late 60s/early 70s my dad (like everybody's dad) listened to WCCO. 'CCO used to play a "comedy" song that had a line that went something like... "If I had wings then I could fly away and leave that old bad woman 'till next Christmas day". Do you recall this song?
