JOYCE LAMONT

A close up of a person with a microphone

Joyce Lamont began her radio career in 1950 at WCCO Radio, initially working behind the scenes as a continuity writer, crafting copy for broadcasts. Her engaging writing style and warm voice quickly led her to on-air roles, and she soon became a beloved radio presence. Lamont was famously the voice of Dayton’s Musical Chimes, a long-running segment sponsored by the Dayton’s department store, and lent her voice to a variety of popular programs including Best Buys and others that blended music, community news, recipes, homemaking tips, and travel features.

Over a broadcasting career that spanned more than fifty years, Joyce Lamont became a household name and a daily companion to generations of listeners. At the height of her popularity, she reportedly received up to 10,000 letters a month from fans. A trailblazer for women in broadcasting, she was widely admired as a role model and pioneer in a male-dominated industry.

In 1989, after decades at WCCO, she transitioned to KLBB-AM, where she continued to work with several former colleagues, bringing her familiar voice to a new audience while preserving her signature style of warm and informative programming.

Joyce Lamont passed away in 2014, at the age of 98.
