REMEMBERING FRANKLIN HOBBS (1920-1995)

Franklin Hobbs was a beloved figure in American radio, best known for his long-running overnight program "Hobbs' House" on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis. His smooth, resonant voice and carefully curated playlists made him a comforting presence for late-night listeners across the country.
Born in 1920 in Minneapolis, Hobbs began his entertainment career on the West Coast, singing with big bands and acting in radio dramas such as Lux Radio Theater and One Man’s Family. During World War II, he served as a B-24 bomber gunner, flying over China and Burma. After the war, he transitioned to producing radio shows for stars like Perry Como, Jo Stafford, and Mel Tormé, and worked for Warner Brothers and ABC Paramount Records.
In 1959, Hobbs joined WCCO Radio, launching "Hobbs' House," an overnight program featuring a mix of music from artists like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and big bands, interspersed with news, weather, and Hobbs' personal commentary. He often broadcasted from the studio but occasionally took the show on the road to college campuses or his cabin on Gull Lake.
Hobbs had control over his music selection, and performers appreciated the exposure his program provided. Listeners valued his warm demeanor and the sense of companionship he offered during the quiet hours of the night.
After leaving WCCO in 1981 Hobbs moved to KEEY FM and then to KLBB-AM in 1983, where he continued to be a favorite among listeners until his passing in 1995 at the age of 75.
Franklin Hobbs passed away in 1995 at the age of 75.
