REMEMBERING SID HARTMAN (1920-2020)

Sid Hartman was a legendary sports journalist and media personality in Minnesota, best known for his long and prolific career with the Minneapolis Star Tribune and WCCO Radio. Hartman began his journalism career as a newspaper delivery boy for the Minneapolis Tribune. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1945, he was writing a sports column for the paper—a role he would maintain for more than 75 years.

In 1955, Hartman joined WCCO Radio where he became one of the station’s most recognizable voices, contributing interviews, commentary, and pregame shows tied to broadcasts of Minnesota’s major sports teams—including the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, North Stars, and University of Minnesota Gophers.

Hartman hosted or contributed to a variety of features, including “Hartman’s Corner” and “Today’s Sports Hero,” and was a frequent voice during morning drive-time, where he shared sports updates and witty banter with WCCO personalities such as Boone & Erickson, Eric Eskola, Dave Lee, and Steve Cannon.

Hartman co-hosted the "Sports Huddle" on Sunday mornings—a beloved regional institution he launched in 1981 with Dave Mona. The program aired for nearly four decades and became a ritual for generations of Minnesota sports fans.

Known for his close relationships with athletes, coaches, and team executives—often referring to them as “his close personal friends”—Hartman was a singular figure in American sports journalism.

Sid Hartman continued writing for the Star Tribune and contributing to WCCO well into his later years. His final column was published on the day he died in 2020 at the age of 100.
