For nearly three decades, Cedric Adams was the most recognized voice in the Upper Midwest. Adams began his broadcasting career in 1931 with a small dramatic role on WCCO Radio. By September 1934, he had delivered his first newscast for the station, quickly becoming a regional institution.
Adams's influence extended beyond news reporting; he hosted popular programs such as "Stairway to Stardom," "The Phillips 66 Talent Parade," and "Dinner at the Adams'," often broadcasting from his home or boat on Lake Minnetonka . His versatility and dedication led to a staggering workload—at one point, he was producing 54 radio shows, eight television broadcasts, and 15 newspaper columns each week.
His 10:00 p.m. newscast became a nightly ritual for many. Pilots flying over the region reported seeing lights extinguish across towns and farms as people tuned out after his sign-off.
Adams's prominence extended to national television; he occasionally substituted for his friend Arthur Godfrey on CBS's "Talent Scouts" and appeared on Edward R. Murrow’s "Person to Person" . Despite his national appearances, he remained deeply connected to his Minnesota roots, endearing himself to audiences with his folksy humor and relatable style.
On February 18, 1961, Adams passed away at the age of 58.
