RUSSIA (USSR)
RK 02 - ISKRA-2 Satellite
RK-02 (Iskra-2) was a small Soviet amateur radio communications satellite associated with the Iskra satellite program. Built by students and radio amateurs at the Ordzhonikidze Aviation Institute, the 28-kg satellite carried a transponder and telemetry beacon for experimental ham-radio communication between operators in the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. Launched in April 1982 and deployed from the Salyut-7 space station by cosmonauts, the satellite orbited at a low altitude and transmitted in the 21- and 28-MHz amateur bands. Because of its low orbit it remained operational only briefly.

Voyager Experimental Aircraft
In December 1986, pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager flew Voyager nonstop around the globe for nine days, covering more than 26,000 miles and setting the first unrefueled, nonstop circumnavigation of the Earth by aircraft. The historic flight began and ended at Edwards Air Force Base.
