ARGENTINA (ESPERANZA BASE)
LRA36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel
LRA36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel is a unique shortwave radio station operated by Argentina from Base Esperanza. Established in 1979, the station broadcasts intermittently on shortwave to serve personnel at the Antarctic base while also reaching international shortwave listeners and radio enthusiasts around the world. Programming typically includes Spanish-language music, news, and messages of goodwill from Antarctica. Because of its remote location and limited schedule, broadcasts from LRA36 are considered a rare and prized catch among shortwave listeners.
UNITED STATES (McMURDO STATION)
AFAN - American Forces Antarctic Network
The American Forces Antarctic Network (AFAN) provided radio service to U.S. personnel stationed in Antarctica, particularly at McMurdo Station and Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. In addition to local AM and FM outlets, AFAN operated shortwave transmitters that relayed programming across the continent to remote research camps and field parties. AFAN’s shortwave broadcasts carried music, news, sports, and recorded programming from the American Forces Network, helping maintain morale and communication for personnel working in the isolated Antarctic environment. For shortwave listeners, these transmissions were a sought-after signal from one of the most remote broadcasting locations on Earth.
