REMEMBERING HOWARD VIKEN (1924-2021)

Howard Viken joined WCCO Radio in 1950, embarking on a 39-year tenure that made him one of Minnesota's most beloved voices. He hosted the early morning show, signing on at 5 a.m., and became known for his warm, conversational style that helped transition WCCO from formal broadcasting to a more personable approach.

In 1957, Viken launched "The Howard Viken Show," further solidifying his reputation. His prominence extended beyond Minnesota, occasionally filling in for Arthur Godfrey on the national CBS radio network.

Viken played a pivotal role in launching comedian Bob Newhart's career. He was among the first to give significant airtime to Newhart's debut album, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart," on WCCO Radio. This exposure in the Minneapolis market helped the album gain national attention, leading to its immense success.

In 2004 Viken was inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 97.
